Pax, Freunde, Pax is a solo miniature for trumpet and tape, written in 2008 for the Serbian trumpeter Nenad Marković. The work continues a line of exploratory solo miniatures begun with the double-bass Miniatures op. 1 and Avanti, Amico!
The expression of the piece is strongly shaped by the tape and by Marković's personality. During the preparation of the work, I consulted with him on both the virtuoso and motivic aspects of the composition. The work is therefore conceived not merely as a trumpet solo, but as music written for a specific first performer.
The work also has a personal and extra-musical dimension, connected with feelings surrounding events in Poland and the Balkans at the turn of the millennium. The tape/electronics were partly created in Marian Czarnecki's computer studio.
